Hempstead is one of the 75 counties in the state of Arkansas. It was created in 1818 from parts of Arkansas county. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,609, down from 23,587 in 2000, and well below the all-time high of 32,770 in 1940. The county seat and largest city is Hope.
The county has 741.36 square miles (1,920 km2) of area, of which 728.77 sq mi (1,888 km2) is land. It is bordered Pike County to the north, Nevada County to the east, Lafayette County to the south, Miller County to the southwest, Little River County, Arkansas to the west and Howard County to the northwest.
Hempstead's county seat, Hope, is the birthplace of William J. Clinton, 42nd President of the United States.
