Inyo is one of the 58 counties in the state of California. It was created in 1866 from parts of Mono and Tulare counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,546, up from 17,945 in 2000. The county seat is Independence and the largest and only city is Bishop. Inyo covers 10,226.98 square miles (26,487.8 km2), of which 10,203.10 square miles (26,425.9 km2) is land.

The county borders San Bernardino County on the south, Kern County on the southwest, Fresno County on the west, Tulare County on the northwest, Mono County on the north, Esmeralda County, Nevada on the northeast, Nye County, Nevada on the east and Clark County, Nevada on the southeast. Inyo County only has one incorporated city, Bishop, while every other area is unincorporated.
