Kern is one of the 58 counties in the state of California. It was created in 1866 from parts of Los Angeles and Tulare counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 839,631, up from 661,645 in 2000. The county seat and largest city is Bakersfield. The county covers 8,161.42 square miles (21,138.0 km2), of which 8,140.96 square miles (21,085.0 km2) is land.
Kern is bordered by Kings and Tulare counties on the north, Inyo County on the northeast, San Bernardino County on the east, Los Angeles and Ventura counties on the south, Santa Barbara County on the southwest, San Luis Obispo County on the west and Monterey County on the northwest.
