San Benito (the name is a contraction of the Spanish spelling of "Saint Benedict") is one of the 58 counties in the state of California. It was created in 1874 from part of Monterey county. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,269, up slightly from the 53,234 recorded in 2000. The county seat and largest city is Hollister.
The county has 1,390.73 square miles of area (3,602.0 km2), of which 1,389.06 square miles (3,597.6 km2) is land. The county is bordered on the south and west by Monterey County, the northwest by Santa Cruz County, the northeast by Merced County and the east by Fresno County.
San Benito is part of the 12-county San Francisco Bay Area Combined Statistical Area.
